Eagle Nest Lodge FAQs & Reviews
These questions were asked by a prospective client and answered by Dr. Jim Black from Toll City, Indiana.Q) A friend and I are thinking of taking a fly-fishing trip to Eagle Nest Lodge in October. This would be our first fly fishing trip as beginners. Would you recommend this place to a beginner?
R) Yes, I just took my son and son-in-law over Memorial Day weekend, neither of whom had any previous experience. They did very well and the guides are superb with beginners.
Q) Was the lodge comfortable?
R) Very, very comfortable and well appointed. It is a fishing and hunting lodge so there is no TV. Rooms are spacious and well decorated in the Montana log cabin style.
Q) How was the food?
R) The cook is Sherry and simply put she is WONDERFUL! If you have any preferences let them know because I can assure you that Sherry will go out of her way to accommodate you. The food is TERRIFIC!
Q) Were the guides patient and knowledgeable?
R) I have fished in Montana for the last 10 years at least once a year. My wife and I always use guides and the ones I use at Eagle Nest are the best of the best I have ever used. The guides are superb professional guides and are Montana boys through and through. Believe me, this is very important.
Q) Did you prefer float or wade fishing? Did they give you a choice?
R) I have no preference other than my one funky knee prefers float. We usually do about 50% of both.
Q) Was the equipment in good condition?
R) Rods are the new Orvis T3s and equipment is better than what I travel with myself.
Q) What time of year did you go?
R) Usually July every year and this year in May too.
Q) How much time during the day did you actually spend fishing?
R) 7 - 8 hours with time out for lunch.
Q) Were the waters crowded while you were fishing?
R) One of the days on the Memorial weekend it was a little more tan usual, but the guides will make adjustments for that by mixing wade with drift. Otherwise we try to fish mid week. However, the Bighorn is not as crowded as other rivers I have fished in Montana.
Q) Have you returned to Eagle Nest Lodge since your first trip?
R) This month will be my third trip. We have stayed in lodges throughout Montana and one in Idaho. Believe me when I say that there are only 3 lodges to which we have returned. The food is superb and the staff will do anything necessary to make your stay excellent. The Bighorn River is the best fishery for big trout in the state and maybe in the World. Eagle Nest is the ONLY place to stay if you want to fish this world-class river.
